How to Set Up the Piano for Online Piano Lessons

You’ve typed into the Google Search bar “online piano lessons Mississauga” or “online piano lessons for kids” and found your way to our little musical corner of the Internet. What can you do to get the most out of your online piano lessons?

Equipment and Materials for Online Piano Lessons

  • Piano or a keyboard

  • Piano lesson books to be placed within arms reach

  • Tablet, laptop, or mobile phone with audio and video capabilities

  • Gooseneck holder (to hold the mobile phone or tablet) that attaches to a side table or a gooseneck tablet floor stand. Hot Tip of the Day: If the tablet slips out of the gooseneck holder, try using elastics for reinforcement.

  • Side table (for the laptop or for the gooseneck holder)

  • Ability to connect using Zoom, Skype, or WhatsApp video. The application is chosen by the teacher. If you have a strong preference for a particular application, please let us know and we will take that into consideration when matching you with a qualified teacher.

Recommended Home Setup for Online Piano Lessons

Adjust the gooseneck holder so that the teacher can see the hands playing the keys. We recommend a view from the side - like a ¾ view, but a top view is good as well.

Examples of Setups That Work for Online Piano Lessons:

The first picture shows the most basic setup. It is a laptop sitting on a small side table. It is simple and it gets the job done. You can use books to prop up the laptop to get a good view of the keys.

The second picture depicts a setup using a tablet attached to a gooseneck holder anchored to a tall stool.

The third image shows a good angle for capturing finger placement on the keyboard. You can also see our hot tip in action. Pink elastics are acting as reinforcements to hold the tablet in place against the gooseneck holder.

How Long are the Online Piano Lessons?

We recommend 30 minute music lessons for beginners or for those just starting out. Parents are encouraged to drop by a few minutes before the end of the class for a brief summary of the online piano lesson.
