At Mississauga School of Music, we offer a range of theory lessons in Mississauga and the Greater Toronto Area to prepare students for their RCM Theory Examinations – a necessary component if they are working towards high school accreditation.

Elementary Music Theory Lessons
Preparatory Theory, Level 1 Theory, Level 2 Theory, Level 3 Theory, Level 4 Theory
Students are introduced to the rudimentary components of music, notation, music terms, and melody.
While RCM does not offer formal examinations for elementary theory levels, it is recommended that students learn the basic elements of music to complement their practical studies.
Intermediate Music Theory Lessons
Level 5 Theory, Level 6 Theory, Level 7 Theory, Level 8 Theory
Intermediate theory lessons take a more comprehensive look at musical notations and conventions, analysis, and melodies. It builds on the musical foundation established at the elementary level.
Students write a formal theory exam for each level. The theory exam is a corequisite to the practical exam and is required in order to earn the comprehensive certificate for the respective RCM level.
Advanced Music Theory Lessons
Level 9 History, Level 9 Harmony, Level 10 History, Level 10 Harmony and Counterpoint, ARCT History, ARCT Harmony and Counterpoint, ARCT Analysis
Students learn complex musical phrasing and melodies, chromatic vocabulary, structural analysis of pieces, compositional techniques, and gain a deep understanding of the musical structure from a variety of musical eras.
Advanced music theory lessons are taught by our resident music theory teacher and by teachers with MA Degrees in Music.
The theory exam is a corequisite to the practical exam and is required in order to earn the comprehensive certificate for the respective RCM level.
